ECW On Sci-Fi Results - September 9, 2008
Sep 10 2008 by Mike Ryan
Results by Rich Twilling
[Q1] Extensive footage aired of Unforgiven which resulted in Matt Hardy winning the ECW Championship Scramble to become the new ECW Champion...
The opening video aired and fireworks lit up the stage. The ECW fireworks are always the best ones. Todd Grisham and Matt Striker welcomed us to the show. Tony Chimmel introduced the new ECW Champion, Matt Hardy, who came out in his ring gear wearing the belt. Hardy did not need the belt extender although that belt still looked huge on him...
Hardy said that once he was drafted to ECW, his goal was to become the ECW Champion...
Twill's Two Cents: I would hope that was his goal since there is nothing else to strive for on the show.
Hardy thanked the fans and his critics as well, because his critics made him work even harder to prove them wrong. He said he would become the best ECW Champion ever. Mark Henry's music hit and he came out to the ring briskly with Tony Atlas in tow...
Henry said Hardy was standing there with his title and that he wanted a rematch. Atlas, completely disregarding proper verb tenses, said, "Matt, if you ever put your hands on me again, there are going to be a problem." Henry attacked Hardy but the new champion quickly disposed of both Henry and Atlas before retreating up the ramp with his championship belt...
Twill's Two Cents: That was a solid, yet unspectacular, but logical segment. Good stuff.
Grisham plugged tonight's main event tag team match of Hardy and Finlay vs. Henry and Mike Knox... [C]
[Q2] 1. John Morrison (with The Miz) defeated Evan Bourne in 14:51. They aired footage of Bourne and Mysterio winning their tag team match on Raw last night vs. The Miz and John Morrison. Striker compared Bourne's popularity to Sarah Palin. He compared listening to Morrison to Hilary Clinton. Ouch. Odd to see the Republicans get some love in the media.
Bourne and Morrison fought to the floor as the show went to commercial… [C]
Bourne was on the offensive coming back from commercial. With Morrison distracting the referee, Miz attacked Bourne, allowing Morrison to take the advantage. Bourne missed a springboard move and Morrison dropkicked Bourne to the floor. He continued the onslaught on Bourne outside of the ring.
Morrison continued to work over Bourne with various mat holds as the match exceeded the ten minute mark. Striker asked us if we were ready for "Happy Days" in Milwaukee. If you know me, you will know that I loved that! Bourne was able to take advantage of the match with multiple kicks and multiple nearfalls. He then hit a hurricarana for a long two count but his back continued to bother him.
[Q3] Bourne tried a standing moonsault but Morrison put his knees up. The finish came with Bourne going to the top for the Shooting Star. He instead jumped at Miz. Morrison hit the springboard Shining Wizard on Bourne, who took a sick backflip bump on the apron. Morrison pulled him into the ring and scored the pinfall victory...
Twill's Two Cents: This was a very good, old school style match. Both Morrison and Bourne are capable of amazing high flying moves, but they have the goods to wrestle too, and meaningfully. Grisham and Striker were very good here as well. All around, this was a fantastic TV match.
Footage aired of the Finlay and Mike Knox feud, followed by the announcers plugging tonight's main event, featuring both men... [C]
2. Jack Swagger defeated Josh Daniels in 2:12. Swagger is billed as the "All American American." He sort of looks like a smaller and retarded Brock Lesnar. He also came out to Cody Rhodes' old theme music. Swagger won the match with what Striker called "The Blue Thunder Bomb," which was a side suplex into a powerbomb...
Twill's Two Cents: I like pushing new stars, but when you introduce so many at once without recognizable gimmicks, it is hard to decipher them. Even the guy with the gimmick, Ricky Ortiz, is boring as hell.
Matt Hardy, Finlay, and Hornswoggle made their way through the backstage area in preparation for their match. Ricky Ortiz stopped them and gave them a Ricky O Rally Towel for good luck... [C]
3. Matt Hardy and Finlay (with Hornswoggle) defeated Mark Henry (with Tony Atlas) and Mike Knox in 13:26. Hardy and Henry began the match. Henry dominated in the one on one situation and used his power to overwhelm Hardy. Hardy made various comeback attempts but Henry quickly thwarted each and every one. Henry missed an elbow drop and Hardy tried to recover as the show went to commercial... [C]
Knox had Hardy grounded with a reverse chinlock coming back from the break. Finlay received the hot tag and kicked the nuts of Knox. Knox reversed his team's fortune by hitting a big boot and tagging in Henry. By the way, Atlas is absolutely ripped. Good for him at his age.
Finlay took a prolonged beating from the heels before Hardy received the hot tag and got the best of Knox. He nearly scored the win with a middle rope bulldog. He then hit a moonsault but Henry broke up the fall. [Overrun] Hornswoggle got involved, which allowed Finlay to knock out Henry with a shillegleh. Hardy hit the Twist of Fate on Knox for the win...
After the match, Finlay, Hornswoggle, and Hardy celebrated in the ring as the heel trio looked pissed heading back up the ramp...
Twill's Two Cents: Fun match. We are obviously moving toward a Hardy vs. Henry singles match, so this was what it was. The action was beyond solid, if not noteworthy.
