"Hall of Fame so far.."
Column written by Stro "The Maestro of Wrestling"
Hello everyone and welcome to another column edition of the "WFS". What crazy weather we have had hear lately across the country going from warm to cold and back again. Can't wait till Spring. With that, on with the "WFS".
Very much looking forward to this year's WWE Hall of Fame ceremony. So far quite a few of the great legends and people that I have worked with will be inducted.
"Stone Cold" Steve Austin
Steve Austin is famed for revolutionized the industry during the "Attitude Era". Even before then, back when I first met him, he was an outstanding accomplished wrestler having classic matches with "Gentleman" Chris Adams and another 2009 Hall of Famer Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. Transcending now from wrestling to films like "The Condemned", "The Longest Yard" and TV shows such as "Nash Bridges", Steve continues to make his mark outside the ring. Congratulations to Steve Austin for being inducted in the 2009 Hall of Fame. "Hell Yeah!"
Terry and Dory Funk Jr.
The only bother duo to have held the NW World Heavyweight championship.
Dory Funk Jr. was a great technical wrestler with one of the best "upper cuts" in wrestling history. His matches with the legendary Harley Race were instant classics. Terry Funk combined great technical ability with loads of charisma and the killer instinct to take it to the extreme. Meeting, wrestling, and working with "The Hardcore Legend" was a real treat for me and one I will always cherish. "The American Dream Dusty Rhodes, a legend both the Funks have had a storied history with, is perfect for inducting the legendary brothers. Congratulations to the Funk brothers for being inducted in the 2009 Hall of Fame. In the words of Terry Funk "Forever, forever, forever!"
Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat
"The Dragon" is a true wrestling legend who throughout his career has always stayed a fan favorite and provided us with some of the greatest matches in wrestling history. Whether it be the NWA, WWE,Japan, or WCW, Ricky Steamboat always made his mark as one of the top stars of the wrestling industry. Steamboat along with the late Jay Youngblood were one of the greatest tag teams in NWA history. From his classics match at Wrestlemania III winning the Intercontinental championship in front a record breaking crowd over "Macho Man" Randy Savage to winning the NWA World heavyweight championship from the legendary "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, Steamboat took wrestling athleticism to a whole new level. I never had the opportunity to wrestle Ricky Steamboat even though I have bumped into him off and on through the years. But I had the chance to spar with Steamboat during the EPWT seminar in North Carolina a few years ago and was on cloud nine. The legendary "Nature Boy" Ric Flair inducting Steamboat is icing on the cake. Congradulations to Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat for being inducted in this year's 2009 Hall of Fame!
Looking forward to hearing more inductions in this year's WWE Hall of Fame. I know it was a treat for me last year to be inducted in the ACPW (http://www.myspace.com/acpwpro) Hall of Fame along with the legendary Dennis Condrey of the Midnight Express. Really nice to acknowledge the ones who paved the way for the rest of us.
Tales from The Stro
"Early in my career,I was wrestling the late Chief Wahoo McDaniel in Southport, North Carolina several years back. During the match, I managed to lift the big chief up in the air with a huge vertical suplex. After the match, I was sitting down unlacing my boots when Wahoo sit down next to me shaking his head. He then looked at me and said "Kid, I haven't been suplexed like that since Harley Race!". Needless to say earning Wahoo's respect that early in my career for me was a real treat. "
